Educational Session: Tax Planning, Safe Withdrawal Rates, and Withdrawal Strategies in Retirement

I’m going to be offering an educational session on tax planning, safe withdrawal rates, and withdrawal strategies in retirement on Saturday, May 2nd, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at Koelbel Library in Centennial (Colorado). To be perfectly clear, I am not an expert on these topics. Instead, I will be facilitating the session, sharing some resources, and helping lead discussions around these topics. This session will be applicable to everyone, but is an outgrowth of discussions at a meetup I attend that tends to focus on early retirement so the discussion will likely skew towards folks planning on retiring before age 60.

While I’m still working on the materials, here is the tentative agenda (all times are approximate and the slides are still being developed).

  1. Basics of Taxes (Taxes 101 so we all have a common base level)
    ~9:30 – 10:00  (all times are approximate)
    Slides (tentative)
  2. Tax Planning Stages (The five (?) distinct tax stages in retirement)
    ~10:00 – 11:30
    Slides (tentative)
  3. Break
~11:30 – 12:00 (time to go grab food and bring back for those who want to, there is also a small cafe in the library)
  4. Safe Withdrawal Rates/Strategies (The basics of SWR and 9 dynamic withdrawal strategies)
    ~12:00 – 1:30
    Slides (tentative)
  5. Break
    ~1:30 – 1:45
  6. Scenarios
(Given your situation, and the above information, what accounts should you fund and what order of operations should you follow to withdraw from them?)
    ~1:45 – ???
    Slides (tentative)
